Roller Coasters

We have been very busy learning in second grade.  In Science we learned about spinners, tops, and roller coasters.  It was lots of fun!

We were rolling the marble down the runway.
We were fixing the runway so that it could work.
The marble rolled because it had a  lot of momentum.
We were making ramps and testing them.
We made a roller coaster go around the classroom.
We made the roller coaster go up and down.
The marble is going to the end!
We were excited because we got the marble to go to the other end.
He was ready to catch the marble.
Where's the marble?!
Esteban was ready to catch the marble.

  1. The roller coaster looks like great fun! How did you get the marble to go all the way around the room and out the other end? Would you be able to get a square object to go all the way through the chute? Hmmm....

  2. Dear RandyWalker,

The square wouldn't go through the roller coaster because it has straight sides, and the straight sides wouldn't let it roll. The marble rolled because is a sphere.

To get the marble to go all the way around the room we used momentum and gravity. Momentum gives it speed and makes it go faster to go up the hill. Gravity pulled it back down.
